Leftist Militias Are Concealed Right Among Us

In Utah, a surprising coalition of various groups—from socialists to anarchists—has come together in a state typically known for its conservative leanings.

This week, President Donald Trump labeled ANTIFA as a “major terrorist organization” following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. There are a number of left-wing anarchist factions throughout the U.S., some even reportedly armed.

Salt Lake City, in particular, has seen the emergence of several radical left organizations, including an armed group called Queers Salt Lake City (SLC).

Following Kirk’s murder, this group seemingly deleted its Instagram account and is now under investigation for potential ties to the incident, according to law enforcement sources.

Elmiya Fanaian, a student organizer for the group, commented that, despite the history of peaceful protests, some “confusion” is necessary to challenge power effectively.

Another significant left-wing group in Salt Lake City is the local branch of the Socialist Rifle Association (SRA), which promotes firearms usage among its members. This national organization boasts around 10,000 members, with some having been linked to multiple crimes, including firebombing incidents.

In the summer, the Utah SRA raised funds for “Artruro Gamboa,” an anti-racist accused of murder. Police claim Gamboa was involved in a threatening situation at the “No Kings” rally where he allegedly failed to comply with safety volunteers’ requests to drop his rifle.

After fleeing the scene of the protest where a volunteer inadvertently shot a protester, Gamboa was arrested, facing accusations for creating the dangerous atmosphere that contributed to the protester’s death.

The SRA argues that they have no affiliation with certain online discussions and insists they do not operate as a militia.

In the wake of Kirk’s killing, a Reddit discussion echoed sentiments of being “at war,” with some members insisting that they cannot coexist with what they call fascists. The dialogue around escalating right-wing violence has also sparked concern within these groups.

Another notable organization in Salt Lake City is the American Democrat Socialists (SLDSA), which professes to promote a transition to a truly democratic and socialist society. Their bylaws condemn violence that upholds the status quo but seem more lenient regarding violence intended to resist systemic oppression.

During a Labor Day protest, SLDSA co-chair Matty Jackson encouraged the crowd, posing questions about how to effectively fight back against oppressive structures.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox noted that those arrested in connection to Kirk’s assassination hold strong leftist beliefs, as indicated by certain tattoos found on the crime scene.

The SLDSA recently postponed discussions on public safety following the assassination, focusing on recent events.

A blog post on their site raised the provocative question of what it means to be a revolutionary, suggesting that creative expression can be a powerful form of resistance.

In a broader context, the Palestinian Solidarity Forum in Utah recently called for an “Anti-Zionism Challenge,” urging local businesses to reject Zionism actively.

Among smaller leftist groups in Utah are Utah Pagans for Change and Witches for Change, who have targeted specific Republican politicians with protests.

There’s even a platform called “Radical Guide” that seeks to connect various left-wing communities worldwide, emphasizing collective liberation efforts.

Among the community initiatives is the Salt Lake City Free Skool, which hosts free classes in various subjects, embracing a radical, alternative approach to education.

Another unique group listed is the Boing! Anarchist Collective, appealing to those inspired to act outside legal frameworks for liberation.
