Letter: Re: Green energy needs copper

the author is right. Green energy needs copper.

Southern Arizona has supplied copper for over a century and continues to do so today.

What he doesn’t mention is that it produces more than 10% of the country’s copper at the expense of 24 million gallons of water annually, among other costs. That’s just Pima County.

The new world copper mines will pump at least 6 million gallons or more a year from the Sahuarita well alone. They say it’s hypocritical to support green energy over new mines, but it’s not.

The copper we provide brings scarce water, sinking water tables, cracked foundations, pollution, and mountains of terror. It’s pathetic that an industry that has fought environmentalists for decades is suddenly trying to make itself greener. Don’t be fooled. The people behind this are only interested in green energy as long as they can benefit from it. They don’t live here and they don’t care about us.
