In a recent tweet, I asked University of Georgia alumni Marjorie Taylor-Green, a member of Congress, to remove any mention of her graduating from the UGA from her resume and bio and pay her to never mention it again. I wrote that I was starting a GoFundMe page to raise funds.
I did this in response to a series of Twitter posts by Marge in which she became known as a “national divorce” between the “red” and “blue” states of our country. She advocated for Real Americans in Republican-leaning states. She hated the values of “Awakening” and “Hollywood” being imposed on Real Americans by blue-state liberals.
So, she argued, the country needed a divorce.
Marge seeks separation of many states, primarily in the Deep South, Midwest, and Big Sky Country. I think she thinks it will be the red states that will leave the union.
I’m not a retired history professor, I’m a retired English professor, but if I remember correctly, the last time many states tried to secede from the Union, the Civil War broke out. Friend to friend, cousin to cousin, brother to brother. I know she’s not a Rhodes scholar, and I know she has a mean personality, but I hope that’s not what Marge wants.
There’s another big problem with Marge’s nationwide divorce proposal. Specifically, the problem is that blue states and counties pay most of the federal bills of red states and counties. Blue counties pay 71% of the country’s federal taxes, while red counties receive federal payments from disability, food stamps, unemployment, WIC, Family Assistance with Dependent Children, and a variety of other programs. absorbs most of the
I remember when I was a teenager and my parents hated forcing me to follow the rules. I said I’d rather stay. Marge and her fellow travelers must consider who will pay the bills if they decide to leave.
Also, if the red states leave, will Marge move to nearby Alabama or Mississippi? I have to think. She lives in a state that is neither red nor blue. She goes from purple to blue.
Here in Tucson, we hear stories of our city being excluded from Arizona because of the way we think and how we vote. I hear some hardcore Republicans want to cede Tucson to New Mexico, California, or Mexico so they can establish right-wing nirvana.
Tucson voted very Democratic, and that very one-sided vote helped seal the loss of both gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake and presidential candidate Donald Trump. One of the big problems with kicking Tucson out of Arizona is that Pima County, where Tucson is the only major city, doesn’t border New Mexico, California, or Mexico. Another big problem is that Arizona would lose a lot if it ceded Tucson to another state or country, including a major university, a large air force base, and a thriving software and weapons industry.
I was joking when I wrote the tweet to launch a GoFundMe campaign to pay Marjorie Taylor Green to no longer claim the University of Georgia as her alma mater. But some people took me seriously and told me it was a good idea. Because it’s a real danger.
Fuck. It sounds like you need to figure out how to set up your GoFundMe page.
