Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claimed that Tucker Carlson is a “convenient idiot” in an interview aired on MSNBC Wednesday evening.
Carlson, co-founder of the Daily Caller and the Daily Caller News Foundation, announced on Tuesday that he had met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading some European lawmakers to push for sanctions against the former Fox News host. “Well, this shows what I think we all know: He is what you would call a 'useful idiot,'” Clinton replied. “So if you actually read the translation of what's being said in the Russian media, they're making fun of him. He's like a puppy.”
Clinton lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. In the wake of Clinton's loss, MSNBC hosts and guests routinely exaggerated claims that Trump's 2016 campaign colluded with the Russian government to defeat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The host often brought up documents compiled by Christopher Steele, which have since been discredited.
Clinton argued that Carlson may have been looking for a new employer, citing his April 24 departure from Fox News.
“I wouldn't be surprised if he signed a deal with the Russian media after being fired from so many media outlets in the United States, because he's a useful idiot,” Clinton said. “He's saying things that aren't true. He's parroting Vardimir Putin's series of lies about Ukraine, so I don't understand why Putin won't let him do an interview.”
