According to the study, the number of transgender patients who underwent mastectomies in the next age category, 14 to 15, jumped to more than 50, and at least 60 of the patients were 16 to 17 years old. Under Kaiser's treatment guidelines, doctors could refer minor patients for mastectomy even if they were not taking hormones or had not performed a “desired gender role” for a full year.
“KPNC clinicians provide treatment according to the WPATH guidelines, which require that patients under 18 years of age receive no hormone therapy as an absolute requirement and after at least one year of living in their preferred gender role. “Gender-affirming mastectomy can be recommended,” the study reads. “Adolescents with gender dysphoria can be referred to the KPNC Multispecialty Transition Unit (MST) unit by their pediatrician, endocrinologist, therapist, parent, or themselves if they are 13 years of age or older.”

The researchers lamented “barriers” to medical procedures for transgender people in certain states and said they hoped to confirm their belief that there are fewer regrets and complications after surgery.

Of the 209 patients, only 137 had at least 1 year of follow-up for “complication and revision evaluation” and were included in the total. The researchers found that of that subset, 10 patients had a total of 15 complications, including “hematomas, wound infections, seroma, hypertrophic scars requiring steroid injections, or suture granulomas.” It was determined that
In the same study, 127 of the patients said they were satisfied with the procedure, but only two of the patients, who were 16 years old at the time, expressed regret, and eight left it undocumented.
