st. George — A devastating Littlefield fire wrecked a camper van and killed a resident dog Thursday afternoon.
Shortly after 1:00 PM, the Beaver Dam-Littlefield Fire Department responded to reports of a structural fire at the Kings Court RV Park off Highway 91. Assistant Fire Chief Andre Ojeda told the St. George News that a nearby sedan and several trees were also on fire.
Ojeda said the district’s initial attack focused on a five-wheeler and a pulling RV that were in danger of spreading flames. In both cases, the heat shattered the windows and melted the plastic.
Ojeda said the crew responded with a fire truck and a water truck carrying about 3,500 gallons of water.
Dixie Power has cut power to the entire park. Electricity was restored once the fire was put out, he added, except for campers and nearby structures.
The tree was “slightly charred”, but the crew managed to extinguish the flames and save the tree. However, Ojeda said the fire “completely destroyed” the camper and the vehicle.
“We were lucky enough with this wind, we got there in time and were able to protect other structures,” he said.
His dog ran home while the homeowner escaped the blaze, Ojeda said.
“The fire was raging and he just had to leave,” he said.
A district medical team assisted the homeowner, but the man refused to be transported by ambulance.
In addition, Ojeda said camper and travel trailer owners should be careful about participating in flame-starting activities outside these buildings. “
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Mojave County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
This report is based on statements from police, paramedics or other responders and may not include the full range of findings.
