Local Alabama marks first anniversary with a call to action: Strong communities begin with you

Live Locally Alabama Marks One Year

The Alabama Municipal Federation is celebrating the first anniversary of Live Locally Alabama, a campaign aimed at enhancing the quality of life statewide. Launched by local governments, this initiative seeks to engage citizens of all ages in creating stronger, more vibrant communities.

With 466 cities and towns across Alabama, each has its own distinct strengths and challenges. Over the past year, Live has showcased a variety of services provided by these local governments. It emphasizes the importance of strong leadership, community involvement, and sustainable funding from local taxes, licensing, and fees.

Some examples of services include police and fire protection, water and wastewater management, street and sidewalk upkeep, economic development, education, and garbage collection. Not to mention, parks, recreational programs, libraries, and various community events and festivals.

“Most people don’t realize how many services local governments provide until something goes wrong, or they aren’t available anymore,” noted Greg Cochran, the executive director of ALM. “From the roads we drive on to the parks our kids play in, municipalities are responsible for the services that keep our communities safe and enjoyable.”

Get Involved: Your Voice Matters

In the wake of the local elections in August, it’s an ideal time for citizens to engage with their newly elected officials to shape plans for the future.

There are numerous ways for citizens to get involved and support their local areas:

  • Attend city council meetings to gather information and voice concerns about local issues.
  • Volunteer for community organizations, cleanups, or serve on local boards.
  • Support local businesses, farmers’ markets, and fundraising efforts.
  • Report local issues like potholes and safety hazards to the appropriate authorities.
  • Join neighborhood associations or initiate community improvement projects.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming elections on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, providing another chance for residents to influence local leadership. More details can be found at alabamavotes.gov. You can also reach out to your local government for further information.

For Adults:

  • Engage with your local advisory board or task force.
  • Mentor youth involved in civic leadership programs.
  • Share information on local government services with friends and neighbors.
  • Make sure to vote in all elections.
  • Promote local campaign graphics and videos on social media.

For Young People:

  • Join the Student Government or Youth Council.

Celebrate and Commit

As Live Locally Alabama enters its second year, the Alabama Municipal Federation is committed to taking action to support their local communities—be it through voting, attending council meetings, or simply expressing gratitude to public servants.
