Arizona President Katherine Young, a member of the National Society Children of the America Revolution, introduced a program titled “Keeping the Spirit Alive, Hashknife Pony Express” to the Sun City NSDAR Agua Julia Chapter.
Katherine is a sophomore at Gilbert’s American Leadership Academy. She presented her show with slides showing the history of the Pony Express and her route the Pony Express from Holbrook to Scottsdale. Her Arizona Her CAR Her project goal is to raise enough money to purchase a life size statue of her rider Pony Express on horseback to be placed in Holbrook. Funds are raised through donations and people who purchase various items that the organization sells at program presentations and state meetings.
Members of the Agua Julia chapter were encouraged to dress in clothing, cowgirl hats, bandanas, etc., in keeping with the theme of the program. February saw the 65th annual run of the Hashknife His Pony Express between Holbrook and Scottsdale. Joined by more than 20 of his riders in authentic cowboy costumes, on a 200-mile route he carries a mail bag containing 20,000 first-class letters. Bags are relayed from one horse and rider to the next. The event will be led by the Navajo County Hashknife Sheriff’s Posse.
