Local food ministry in danger of closing

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Church of Gethsemani's food ministry in San Luis, Arizona, is at risk of closure due to a city ordinance banning parking 1.5-ton trucks in residential areas.

This happened after one of the church's trucks crashed into a neighbor's fence last August.

However, the church says the new regulations could force it to close its missionary operations.

The church's pastor, Jose Castro, said: “We have received a lot of complaints from neighbors and have been told that we have to stop all activities.”

But Pastor Castro said they are helping many local residents in need.

“We provide people with food, clothing, furniture, medical supplies, equipment for the disabled, etc.,” Pastor Castro said.

The church wants the city to allow it to load and unload materials from trucks, but some neighbors want the mission to be relocated.

“We always feel at risk when the pastor brings his trailer here because he doesn't just drive one truck, he drives four trucks toward our property at one point. And we would say one day one of those trucks is going to crash, they're going to go 'trying to crash and end up crashing.' said Angelica Torres, a neighbor who crashed into the fence.

Another neighbor, Alejandra Pérez Arce, said, “The lights come on in the middle of the night and don't turn off until the morning, so I can't let my neighbors sleep.''

We have reached out to San Luis Mayor Nieves Reidel's office and are awaiting a response.
