Local man passes away at resort on Sunday evening

Incident at Los Abrigados Resort

On Sunday, July 20th, at around 5:50 PM, officials from the Sedona Police Station responded to a distress call from a man struggling to breathe at 160 Portal Lane, within the Los Abrigados Resort & Spa.

Upon their arrival, Sedona Fire personnel were already attending to two unresponsive men. They quickly suspected an overdose linked to illegal substances, a finding later confirmed by a police report. One man was pronounced dead at the scene after unsuccessful life-saving efforts.

This deceased individual had lived in Sedona for several years and was in his 40s.

A medical emergency was reported by the Sedona Fire District at 5:52 PM, leading to the dispatch of engines and ambulances from various local stations. A Medevac helicopter was initially called but was later deemed unnecessary.

Another man was found in peril and was rushed to Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood for treatment. He was subsequently transported to the Sedona Emergency Center.

Reports indicate that all three individuals were local residents of Sedona.

As investigators arrived, the scene was secured and continued to be blocked off by law enforcement as inquiries progressed.

The incident occurred in a room located on the second floor, on the southern side of the resort’s property.

In a statement, Los Abrigados Resort & Spa expressed their sorrow regarding the guest’s passing, emphasizing their commitment to cooperate with local authorities and redirecting further questions to the Sedona Police Station.

There was some confusion online about the initial call being labeled a “mass casualty incident,” which led to multiple ambulances being dispatched to the scene.

Although the Sedona Police Department did not report any gunfire, they noted hearing shots from the vicinity of an RV park nearby, contrary to what some social media posts suggested.
