‘Lord, Please Protect Me’: Elderly Colorado Woman Takes Exhausting 14-Hour Trip Following Tragic Accident

Colorado Woman Crawls for Help After Accident

A 75-year-old woman in Colorado spent 14 hours crawling home with a broken femur after a trailer accident, according to a local news source. Charlene Kirby, while preparing her property for her grandson’s wedding, was driving a trailer when it jackknifed, leading to her injuries.

On the day of the incident, Kirby was working in her yard—pulling weeds and managing tree limbs—when the accident occurred. During an interview, she described how she was trying to straighten the trailer when things took a turn. “I started running back,” she recalled, though her narrative seemed a bit scattered, as if piecing together the events made it hard to explain.

Kirby, who has a background as a former emergency room nurse, spent the night crawling inch by inch towards her home. Reflecting on her experience, she spoke about her reliance on faith. “I kept praying, asking for help,” she shared, mentioning how she recited a well-known passage from the Bible. “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” Her faith felt like a guiding light amidst her struggle.

Feeling cold and trembling, she worried about potential hypothermia but focused on her movement. “Just take another inch,” she urged herself, comparing her crawling efforts more to an inchworm than any military-style maneuver.

The following morning, her son arrived at the property, found her, and quickly called for an ambulance to get help.

This ordeal, which took place over June 7th and 8th, ended with surgery for her femur and hip on June 9th. After spending some time recovering in a rehabilitation center, she was back home by July 3rd, just in time for the wedding. Expressing gratitude, Kirby noted she felt “lucky” that the situation wasn’t worse.

However, she wasn’t going to let her accident interfere with the wedding festivities. “The doctor told me I wouldn’t be dancing, but I said, ‘Just look at me!’” Kirby was determined to participate in her grandson’s special day.

Reflecting again on her survival, she reiterated that she felt God’s presence throughout her ordeal, stating, “He was with me the whole time.”
