Country music star Luke Combs says he “wanted to crawl into a hole” after the legendary Tracy Chapman said he covered her iconic song with incorrect lyrics.
The country singer spoke about the moment at a recent concert. TikTok videos shared on Tuesday, confessing that Chapman pointed out the mistake in the “Fast Cars” cover.
“She said, ‘So when you recorded that song, you didn’t say, ‘I have to make a decision,’ you said, ‘I still have to make a decision.'” And then, for the first time, I found out that he had recorded the song incorrectly. ” Combs said.
“I remember wanting to crawl into a hole when she said that,” Combs told the live audience.
Combs said that despite the mistake, Chapman felt “amazing” about it and didn’t feel bad about it at all. The country singer said he wanted to cover the song he loves faithfully and accurately, but admitted he still feels confused.

Chapman may not be upset, but Combs still seems to blame himself for the situation.
“I think about that every time I sing this song, and I’ll think about it every time I sing this song for the rest of my life,” he told fans.
“The version you know… it’s not words. It’s not just words. I made it up in my head,” he said. (Related: Luke Combs, Eric Church headline star-studded Hurricane Helen benefit show)
“So tonight I’m probably going to sing ‘I’ve got to make a decision,’ because Tracy Chapman said so, dammit, I’m going to do it,” he continued.
