Battle Lake’s M. Marie Grimsgard, 86, passed away on June 1st. A service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Yellow Lake Lutheran Church in Webster, Wisconsin. A private burial will be held at the Morningside Memorial Gardens in Coon Rapids at a later date.
M. Murray (Nelson) Grimsgard was born on June 12, 1936 in his home north of Kingston Township to Gust and Ruby (Anderson) Nelson.
She graduated from Kimball High School in 1954 and attended St. Cloud State University. Suspending her education to support her family. She completed her college education as a social worker at Metropolitan State University in 1987.
On March 31, 1956, she married Richard Grimsgard at the family’s mother church, the Ostmark Lutheran Church. They had five children during this marriage.Richard he died in January 2006
After completing her education, she became a family advocate/counselor for Anoka County Head Start. St. Paul Children’s Hospital. Early Education Program at St. Paul’s School. Dakota; Pillsbury Center (North Suburb); and Freeport West. She served metropolitan families in her four counties, helping them realize their potential and providing resources to support this effort. She has helped many families in this field for almost 30 years.
In the final years of their career, Richard and Marie spent many weekends at a cabin in a beautiful area of ​​northwestern Wisconsin (Danbury), which they made their home in retirement. After Richard died, she spent the winter at Apache Junction near the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. In 2018, he moved to Vining.
Marie has five surviving children: Cynthia Quast, Richard Grimsgard, Cecilia Grimsgard (special friend Gary Walker), Catherine (Daryl) Cheney, and Carol Johnson. Her grandchildren, Michelle Quast Blair (special friend John Schmidt), Elizabeth (Dave) Pagel and Jason (Shelley) Quast. Tiara Taylor, Tanya Taylor (special friend Jesse Salzar), Josh (Heather) Johnson, Trevor Johnson (fiancee Emma Brown), Blake Johnson (special friend Amber Mrozek), Leon Johnson. Great-granddaughters Leopold and Aurelia Purgel, Chasity Winfield, Mira Salzar, Willow Johnson and Lexi Ristrom. Siblings, Ruth Ann (Dennis) Luca and John (Bernie) Nelson. Her best friend of over 60 years, Carolyn Lewis. I have many other family members and friends.
Her grandson, Derek Cheney, died earlier. her stepson, John Quast and Patrick Johnson; her parents; her sister Millie Nelson;
Memorabilia was preferred over family.
