MAG Regional Council Phoenix elects Mayor Kate Gallego as chair

PHOENIX – The mayor of Arizona’s largest city was elected last week to lead next year’s board of directors for the Valley’s Regional Transportation Planning Authority.

The Maricopa Coalition of Governments Regional Council elected new officers at its annual meeting Wednesday, electing Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego as chair.

Taking the gavel from Avondale Mayor Ken Wise, Gallego said his top priority was extending the Proposition 400 transportation tax, which requires voter approval.

“Our transportation heritage shows that we are meticulous in making data-driven, community-supported decisions,” she said. said in a press release. “Given the opportunity, we are confident that voters will take notice and support our transportation plans so that our communities will continue to benefit from safe and reliable transportation systems.”

Gallego said it will also focus on issues such as pollution, homelessness and domestic violence.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke was elected Vice-President and El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo was elected Treasurer.

Buckeye Mayor Eric Osborne, Gilbert Mayor Briggett Peterson, and Mesa Mayor John Giles were elected as members of the public.

The term of office of the new officers will be one year.
