Major League Fishing addresses lawsuit related to deadly Smith Lake incident

Major League Fishing (MLF) is facing a lawsuit following a tragic boat collision that resulted in the deaths of three individuals during a tournament at Lake Smith on April 16th.

The incident involved a boat operated by tournament angler Flint Davis and affected all three men aboard a separate non-tournament vessel, as reported by local law enforcement, including Joey M. Bloom of Altoona, John K. Clark of Kalman, and Jeffrey C. from Mississippi.

Joey Bloom’s family has filed a lawsuit in Kalman County, naming MLF, Davis, and Guideboat Captain Gary Holcomb as the defendants. They allege negligence, asserting that there were unsafe conditions during the tournament.

In light of the legal action, MLF expressed their sorrow over the incident and denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing that participant safety is their highest priority. The organization remains confident that the legal process will validate their stance.

MLF released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took place at the Smith Lake tournament, and our hearts are with our families and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking event. Every day, especially at major league fishing events, participants and their safety are our number one priority.”

They added, “Unfortunately, we are the defendants of legal action related to this tragedy. We are not cheating on this accident and we are confident that the legal process will bring that conclusion. We cannot comment further at this point, with respect to the parties involved, their families, and the legal process.”

The case will continue in Kalman County as the legal system attempts to determine responsibility following the disaster at Lake Smith.
