Man arrested after hours-long overnight standoff in Maricopa

Aricopa, Ariz. — A man is in custody after allegedly threatening to kill a woman and chasing her and her children through the streets of Maricopa before barricading himself in a home for several hours Saturday morning.

Maricopa police said they were called around 3 a.m. near Porter Road and Smith-Enke Road for a report of an aggravated assault with a firearm.

Callers told police that a man threatened to kill the woman and chased her and her children through the street.

Officers arrived and found a woman and child. They were not injured.

However, the suspect refused to leave the house and a standoff ensued.

While the man barricaded himself in the home, additional police presence, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, and a shelter-in-place order were issued for nearby residents.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a man identified as 56-year-old Shannon Hammond Sr. turned himself in and was taken into custody.

It is not clear what led to this situation or how the suspects knew the victims.
