PRESSCOTT, Ariz. – A man is in custody after a series of “dangerous events” in Prescott on Wednesday afternoon.
Prescott police say they received information from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office about a man holding a felony warrant from Maricopa County for weapons misconduct. James Crespo, 70, was previously said to have fled law enforcement and was believed to be armed and threatening to blow up people.
Crespo drove from west of Sam Beaute Road towards Prescott, and officers attempted to stop traffic. The spike strip was later set up to prevent Crespo from driving into more populated areas.
Police say Crespo parked the car in front of the spike strip and grabbed a blow torch through the window to light it. Crespo then ran down the spike strip and headed towards town.
Crespo ran into a residential area away from Sambeute Road and crashed into a Prescott police vehicle before being blocked by a YCSO vehicle.
After being blocked, officials say an explosion occurred inside Crespo’s vehicle. The explosion also burned the vehicles of the YCSO Deputy Station and the surrounding area.

Police say Crespo got out of the car with a propane tank and a blow torch.
Crespo was taken into custody after less than fatal force against him. He was taken to a Phoenix area hospital to treat his injuries.
No officers, agents or bystanders were injured throughout the series of events.
This incident is under investigation.
