In the city of Yuma on Monday, a man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an 89-year-old woman with bricks and other objects after breaking into a tailor shop.
Yuma police identified the man as James Oakley, 72, who was arrested Monday on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and criminal damages.
Police responded to a call around 5:15 p.m. of an assault near Eighth Avenue and 32nd Avenue. Police discovered that Oakley threw a brick through the front window of Rose’s Alterations & Dress and broke into the store.
Police said the man entered the house and assaulted the elderly woman with a brick, a sewing machine and a cane. The man then fled the scene, leaving the woman inside.
Authorities have since taken her to a hospital where she is in a stable condition, police said.
Officers later found Oakley in a trailer behind the store. Police said the man tried to start a fire in the trailer, but officers saw smoke coming out of the car and took him out.
Mr. Oakley was also taken to a hospital for preventative measures and later placed in the Yuma County Detention Center.
