Yuma, Arizona (azfamily) – Three people, including two firefighters, have been injured after a massive fire involving the Yuma business on Friday morning.
The fire began around 9am, according to rural Metrofire Yuma County. 13th Street and Engler Avenue. Due to the size of the flame, local metros requested assistance from the Yuma Fire Station, and crews from both departments worked to contain it.
Country Battalion Chief Jeff Woodruff said one firefighter was hospitalized with a muscular injury caused by hose movement. The second firefighter twisted his ankle and refused to be hospitalized.
Woodruff Chief added that the man who was in the business was severely burned.
Yuma Fire says there have been multiple reports of short blackouts in the area. The Arizona family confirmed that Yuma DMV lost only 10 minutes and experienced minimal disruption.
The chief said that at this point the public should not be worried about smoke in the air.
“Most of it fades before you get close to the public. As this is an industrial area, there should be no real danger to anyone,” Woodruff explained. “For the safety of the firefighters, they go to a self-contained breathing device.”
The local metro initially reported that the fire was in AA Sidkol, a recycling factory, but later said it was burning in business east of the factory.
The public is urged to avoid the area so that crew members can work. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.
