Federal agents in Arizona have arrested a Minneapolis man more than a year after he was charged with the shooting outside his Minneapolis apartment building.
Dajon Cortez Ramon Yarborough, 32, was stopped during a traffic stop on July 7 in Navajo County in eastern Arizona, according to federal agency spokesman Stephen Fisher. was identified and handed over to the Federal Marshals Service.
The sheriff’s office took Yarborough back to Minnesota and appeared in Hennepin County District Court on Wednesday to declare second-degree manslaughter and wrongful conduct related to the death of Brooklyn Park resident Darrell L. Sims II, 27. He was charged with possession of a weapon. April 2, 2022.
Mr. Yarborough remains in jail on $1 million bail before he appears in court on Tuesday. His attorney was left with a message requesting a response to the allegations.
Sims was shot in the chest at 2400 Elliott Street just before 10 p.m., according to the indictment. He died in Ho Chi Minh City about nine hours later.
Prison records show that Yarborough was truant at least six times during his supervised release on various charges, most recently in January 2022 after a drug conviction. His criminal record in Minnesota includes three drug-dealing and one assault convictions, as well as murder.
According to the criminal complaint:
Witnesses told police a man approached Sims outside her apartment and opened fire. Security video footage from the apartment showed the shooter fleeing the scene.
Home video surveillance sent by the sheriff’s deputy to a classified informant identified Yarborough as the shooter.
The complaint does not mention a motive for the shooting.
