Officials said Friday that a man was killed by a bear at a campground in central Arizona.
The victim, Stephen Jackson, 66, a Tucson resident, was at a campground when the animal tangled around 8 a.m., according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.
Jackson, a Tucson resident, was attacked by an adult male bear while drinking coffee at a construction site, the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff David Rose said Jackson then called for help and neighbors responded.
Neighbors made noise to help. However, the bear managed to drag the victim a few yards at a campground in the Groom Creek area, about 100 miles (161 km) north of Phoenix.
A neighbor then shot and killed the bear, the sheriff’s office told AZFamily.com.
Sheriff officials said there was no threat to the general public. But they are reminding people that shooting or hunting bears is illegal unless there is an immediate threat.
