Man found dead in northern Arizona creek following hike with young son

Yavapai County (AZFamily) — A father died after falling into a creek while hiking with his 6-year-old son, police said. Lawrence Crossing Near Rimrock in Yavapai County.

Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene around 5:30pm on Saturday after receiving a call about a possible body in the creek. When they arrived, an emergency medical team was already on scene along with the victim's uncle.

According to the uncle, the victim, a 51-year-old man, and his 6-year-old son had driven from Tucson and been camping in the area for several days, and the uncle said his nephew called him to say he was lost after leaving the house.

The uncle drove to Lawrence Crossing to check on his nephew's car, then walked to the creek and found the man face down in several inches of water.

The 6-year-old son told detectives his father had fallen backwards into the water, couldn't breathe and “was unable to get out.” The sheriff's office said the son had been taken home by family members and is expected to be reunited with his mother later Monday afternoon.

Detectives are still investigating the man's cause of death, but his name has not been released.
