PHOENIX — A Prescott Valley man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after a shootout with police, authorities announced Monday.
According to the Yavapai County Attorney's Office (YCAO), Joshua Anson Schnobelen, 35, will be serving a “fixed time sentence,” meaning he will have to serve every day he is behind bars with no chance of early release.
According to the YCAO, the defendant pleaded guilty to several charges, including attempted assault on a police officer, and a judge set his sentence for March 21.
He also admitted criminal damage to property and disorderly behaviour to a family member.
What did the guy from Prescott Valley do?
According to prosecutors, a 911 call from Schnobelen's family on Dec. 30, 2021, triggered the incident and led to the suspect's arrest.
According to the YCAO, the caller said Schnoebelen had slammed a family member's head against a wall, knocked over furniture and yelled at several children inside the home, and had threatened to shoot police if they arrived at the house and had several loaded firearms.
According to the YCAO, Schnobelen opened fire on officers who responded to the scene, striking one officer in the leg and another in the head. Police returned fire, ending a standoff that lasted several hours, prosecutors said.
Authorities arrested him and took him to a hospital for treatment, according to YCAO.
County Attorney Dennis McGrane thanked the officers involved in the case.
“Like plumbers, teachers and so many other hardworking members of our community, police officers go to work every day with the expectation that they will be safe and that their work will make our community better,” McGrane said in a statement. “When a dangerous criminal chooses to open fire on someone, they should face the harshest of penalties. I commend the police officers of Prescott Valley for their professionalism and service to their community.”
