TUCSON, Ariz. (13News) – Authorities say a man stole a semi-truck full of luxury sports cars because he had just gotten out of prison and needed a ride home.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office announced on Thursday, February 15, that 23-year-old Isaiah Smith Walker was arrested on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, and felony theft.
According to CCSO, the accident began when Walker, of Oklahoma, approached the driver of a semi-truck at a truck stop in Wilcox.
“(He) told the victim about the truck's load and reassured him, and when the victim tried to get into the car, Walker grabbed the victim and threw him out of the cab,” CCSO said in a Facebook post. ” he said.
Walker then drove away in a semi-truck with 10 people inside. Chevrolet Corvette C8. The sports car is valued at more than $1.25 million, according to CCSO.
A CCSO deputy spotted the truck and attempted to force Walker to pull over.
“The stolen vehicle began driving recklessly, causing (other) vehicles to run off the road,” CCSO said.
Mr. Walker was then stopped and arrested by a CCSO deputy and a Wilcox police officer.
“Walker admitted stealing the vehicle and advised that the Corvette was not the cause and that he had just been released from prison and needed a truck to get home,” CCSO wrote.
Wilcox Police Chief Dale Hadfield thanked his deputy and officers for their actions.
“Deputies and police officers showed great restraint and perseverance in peacefully resolving a serious crime while ensuring that no one else's property was harmed,” Hadfield said. “The stolen vehicle was safely recovered without damage and released to the driver, who was able to continue making deliveries.”
