Man killed in shootout with police in Marana identified

The identity of the 29-year-old man killed in a shootout with Marana police on Saturday has been determined.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of West Ina Road, just west of North Thornydale Road, when Tobin Pico was stopped for a traffic violation, according to a Wednesday news release from the Pima County Regional Critical Incident Team. It started when I was stopped. A multi-agency group is investigating the police-involved shooting.

Pico was determined to be impaired, but he fled from officers because he was handcuffed, the statement said. During the pursuit, officers noticed Pico was in possession of a gun.

Shortly after 6 p.m., an officer shot Pico with a rifle as he ran toward an open store, according to the release.

Pico was shocked, but got up and continued moving toward the open business in the 6900 block of North Thornydale Road.

Shortly afterward, Pico was shot again in a gunfight with police, the statement said. No police officers were injured. Pico died at the scene.

The officers who fired their firearms have been identified as: Brad Gill, a 12-year veteran. Jacob McCarthy, six-year veteran; And Max Wozniak is a seven-year veteran.

The Tucson Police Department and the University of Arizona Police Department have primary responsibility for the criminal investigation. The Marana Police Department is conducting a separate administrative investigation into the officers' actions.

The results of the investigation will be submitted to the Pima County Attorney's Office, which is standard procedure.
