A Catalina Island man shot and killed one of two men he assaulted while clearing a homeless camp on his property, authorities said.
A property owner was assaulted Tuesday afternoon while cleaning up a camp in a community north of Tucson, according to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Officers found James McLaughlin, 47, shot and wounded.
According to the release, a man identified as Clifford Bretthauer, 46, was seen running away.
Detectives said the property owner was cleaning up the encampment when two men approached him. According to the release, he shot and killed McLaughlin when the two men assaulted him.
The property owner's name has not been released and the department has not provided information about his injuries.
Deputies were searching for Bretthauer.

No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation.
