Man shot, killed by Tucson SWAT officer

Days after a man was shot dead by a Tucson Police Department SWAT officer in mid-July, Pima County investigators released more details.

The Pima Regional Serious Incidents Team is an independent law enforcement agency established to lead criminal investigations involving other law enforcement agencies in Pima County.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on July 12, Tucson police responded to a call of a burglary and armed robbery near Mercurio and Regro streets. Officers learned an armed man, later identified as Daniel Shaheen, 32, was confronting one, according to a news release from the incident team.

Shaheen was found by police at a residence near Park Avenue and 32nd Street. After Shaheen barricaded himself, police called in SWAT and hostage-negotiating units for reinforcements, according to the release.

During negotiations, Shaheen was uncooperative and erratic in his behavior, including frequently leaving home with a laser-equipped firearm, the statement said. Negotiations continued for several hours until the morning of July 13th.

SWAT officers saw Shaheen standing by a window around 3 a.m., pointing a pistol at officers, the statement said. A SWAT team member, identified as ninth-year Constable Chad Barker, was on high and fired a single shot from his station-issued rifle, fatally wounding Mr. Shaheen. A handgun was found near Shaheen after the shooting, the statement said.
