LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A pipeline rupture is causing mandatory water conservation measures at the Grand Canyon's South Rim. The restrictions were announced Tuesday.
Restaurant operators have been asked to adapt their menus to reduce water used in food preparation and dishwashing, and hotel room cleaning has also been adjusted to reduce water use. In restaurants, drinking water will only be provided on request.
“These water restrictions are in response to a break in the Trans Canyon Water Main after it was shut down for repairs. The break occurred when crews attempted to apply pressure to the line, extending the current water outage,” the water department report said. Grand Canyon National Park Website.
Park officials say they will require all residents and visitors to reduce water usage in their homes, hotel rooms and campgrounds.
Mandatory water conservation measures include:
- Do not water the grass or plants
- Washing cars, boats, motorcycles or other outdoor vehicles is prohibited
- Use a dry pre-wash method to scrub away food before washing your dishes thoroughly.
- When washing dishes, fill the sink with water to avoid running water.
- Take shorter or less frequent showers
- Please turn off the water when shaving or brushing your teeth.
- Use water-saving flushing technology to minimize the amount of water used when flushing toilets
- Report leaks, spills, and other water damage to the appropriate office.
- Disconnect outdoor hoses from faucets when not in use.
Despite these restrictions, park officials continue to encourage people to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to help prevent the spread of disease.
