Maricopa comes together to honor Trey Liermann

To show community solidarity, Maricopa High School will hold a fundraiser on June 14 to remember former student-athlete Trey Leahman, who passed away on November 8.

The event is designed to celebrate Trey’s passion for football and raise money for the school’s summer football camp.7-on-7 football tournament and big man contest at MHS from 6-8pm

Desert Sunrise High School Head Football Coach Jonathan Clark helped organize the event along with MHS Assistant Coach Chris Leung.

“I’m just trying to do my part,” Clark said. “Trey played really well. He had some tough competition.”

Staff and volunteers from MHS, Desert Sunrise, Football Boosters Club and Safe House with DJ Mentalz gathered to honor Trey.

Known for his unwavering dedication to the sport, Trey Learman left an indelible mark on the community.

As a wide receiver for the MHS Rams, he proudly wore the number 6 jersey to show his talent and dedication on the field.

And as a tribute to Trey, his locker will remain locked after his death, allowing students to leave notes for him until MHS graduation on May 25.

“Football was his whole life,” said his mother, Amber Leahman, when she reflected on Trey’s passion for sports.

“He started playing tackle football when he was eight,” she added. “He just loved it, and he watched it all the time when he wasn’t playing.”

From an early age Trey loved to follow the NFL and his favorite team was the Los Angeles Rams. His room was adorned with Rams memorabilia, proudly displaying the iconic blue and yellow.

And for next week’s event, Leahman wants to create an atmosphere that’s natural, fun, and most importantly, meaningful.

“We want to bring the community together while remembering his love and passion for football,” she said. “We want to highlight what it means to be a student-athlete, time management, mental health, and how to be a leader on campus.”

Horace Raymond, Director of Community Relations for the Arizona Cardinals Football Club, will speak at the event, highlighting the ups and downs of being a high school athlete.

Reelman fondly remembers his son, who was a leader both on and off the field, and said he had a kind heart.

“He was a kind and sensitive soul,” she says. “He was very polite and very loyal. Our family was really proud of him.”

MUSD has participated in 7v7 tournaments in the past, but this year’s event holds special significance as Trey’s memorable first tournament.

Tournament games are held every 25 minutes and allow students to demonstrate their skill sets and have fun.

At the same time, linemen participate in big man competitions featuring activities such as farmer’s walks, bench presses, and tire flips.

The event will also be an opportunity to raise money for a football camp that Trey has cherished throughout his high school years.

T-shirts are available for $20, with $5 donated for each sale. Community members can also donate his $16 to Mariko Params Football to commemorate Trey’s 16th birthday.th Birthday on May 24th.

Liarman thanked the coaches, MUSD staff and community members for the overwhelming support during the event.

“I appreciate everyone’s kindness,” she said. “We only had full support.”
