Maricopa County Reads summer program continues through Aug. 1

With a community goal of 70 million minutes read, the Maricopa County Reading Initiative is one of the largest literacy efforts in the county and plays a key role in reducing learning delays during transitions between school years.

As we head into July, all 65 libraries in Maricopa County will continue their summer reading program, “Reading Maricopa County,” including Queen Creek Library. Participants will track their points this summer through August 1st.

The program began on June 1st. MaricopaCountyLeads.org (English) and CondadoDeMaricopaLee.org (Spanish) The theme of this year's program is “Adventures begin in the library. It reminds us all that with a library card, adventure is just around the corner.”

Participants earn one point for every minute they read a print or e-book or listen to an audiobook, and can earn additional points by attending library events, completing a summer reading challenge or taking part in a community experience where they find secret codes while exploring Maricopa County.

“With nearly 200 summer reading events held throughout the county, libraries are a great place to spend hot summer days,” said Chairman Jack Sellers, who represents District 1 on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

Readers will be awarded prizes at milestones of 500, 750 and 1,000 points, and readers who reach the 1,000 point milestone can choose a free book to take home or donate to an organization serving local youth.

Maricopa County Reading Club is an event open to people of all ages, bringing together 19 public, tribal and military library systems working toward the same goal of promoting learning and literacy throughout the county.

Ways to earn points:

  • Read physical books and e-books.
  • Listen to an audiobook.
  • Attend a library event.
  • Participate in a community experience.
  • Complete the summer reading challenge.

Prizes (while supplies last):

  • 500 points:

    • Free Personal Pizza Coupon for Peter Piper Pizza (ages 0-11).
    • Free Lemonade Coupon from Raising Cane's (All Ages).

  • 750 points:

    • Arizona State Parks Passes (kids ages 5-11, teens and adults).
    • Phoenix Mercury Tickets (All Ages – Maximum 4 per person).

  • Child's Play Theatre Prize Pack.
  • LEGO Minecraft set.
  • Harkins Theatre Family Prize Pack.
