The National Weather Service expects temperatures to approach 117 degrees Fahrenheit over the next few days, and state health officials have issued extreme heat warnings for Maricopa and Pinal counties.
The Arizona Department of Health Services is advising county residents to avoid outdoor activities in the early morning or evening and to stay hydrated.
“Dangerously high temperatures of up to 117°F are expected, which could result in life-threatening illness or death,” National Weather Service officials said.
Moreover, health officials warned in a statement that temperatures inside a car can spike to life-threatening levels within minutes, posing a serious risk even on cold days.
“Do not leave children or pets unattended in the car and always double check that everyone has left the car before setting off,” they said.
