Mark Halperin Says Media’s ‘Slanted’ Coverage Of Harris Makes It ‘Hard To Analyze’ Interview’s Impact On Voters

Newsmax political analyst Mark Halperin argued Friday that the media's bias toward Vice President Kamala Harris makes it difficult to gauge how voters will react to her Thursday's interview.

Vice President Harris was asked about her policy shift during her first interview ahead of the 2024 presidential election with CNN's Dana Bash. On “Wake Up America,” Halperin told host Rob Finnty that Harris' assertion that her “values haven't changed” and her portrayal as a change-of-pace candidate deserve “scrutiny,” but that mainstream media is unlikely to hold her accountable. (Related: Kamala Harris once thought a border wall was “un-American.” Now she supports it.)

“It's hard to analyze these things and think about what voters think when the media is biased in one direction, because the coverage has been so unfair and that was so clearly demonstrated last night. So you're pointing out the right things that deserve scrutiny,” Halperin told Finnerty, “but it's going to be hard to hold her accountable for these things without the broader media scrutiny.”

“Donald Trump should also be held accountable. He is generally accountable for some things and not others. But I can't imagine a network like CNN would give Donald Trump an interview like this,” he added.

Later in the show, Halperin criticized Bash's questions and interview style, as well as the vice president's responses.

“To me, the whole meeting was pointless because unless you ask good questions and then follow up seriously and keep talking until you get an answer, all you get is extra instructions and a bunch of other statements,” he said.

Harris waited more than a month since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee to conduct her first in-person interview, which was accompanied by her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and lasted just under 30 minutes.

Halperin, who runs voter focus groups, YouTube Channel 2WAY said Wednesday that Democrats could be in a “scary position” in November, with polls in key battleground states showing former President Donald Trump on track to overtake Harris.

“There are some public polls out there already, and more to come, and some private polls that suggest she's not leading nationally in the battleground states,” he said. “She may be leading on paper, but within the margin of error. And there are some battleground states where I think Donald Trump is going to be leading if we continue on this trajectory.”
