A group of young vandals caused havoc in the Falmouth, Massachusetts area during a snowstorm on Monday, but escaped with footprints left in the snow, police said.
According to the Falmouth Police Department (FPD), officers responded to Crooked Meadow Road after town crews discovered extensive damage while sanding the street around 2 a.m. Posted online. Police said more than 50 buildings were damaged. According to investigators, most of the damage targeted mailboxes. According to WBZ-TV. Authorities told homeowner Loralyn Teixeira that her mailbox was on the ground and covered in leaves and ice.
“I don’t know what kids, or anyone, get out of something like that. What are you feeling, is this exciting? You don’t understand, you can’t do anything else. ” Teixeira said. “It could have been much worse. A mailbox is better than a house or a car, but still.”
Another resident, Richard Boudreau, told WBZ-TV that his mailbox was dented. “Kids do stupid things, and I’m sure these kids are really regretting this now,” he said. “I don’t think anyone was hurt in the end.” (Related: Report: Police investigating after multiple mailboxes explode near Maryland)
Surveillance cameras were installed in the neighborhood, but some were not working. According to FPD, investigators located the suspect using footprints in the snow. Police did not release the number or names of those involved, but said the investigation is ongoing and charges are expected. Police are asking for help from residents who may have security footage of the vandalism and are encouraging them to come forward.
“I think the moral of this story is don’t commit crimes in the snow,” Boudreau told WBZ-TV.
