Massive Fire In Long Island Senior Complex Kills 2, Displaces 20

A fire broke out at a Long Island senior housing complex on Sunday, claiming the lives of two elderly residents, NBC New York reports.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire at the Harmon Shepard Hill Apartments in Plainview around 5 a.m. according to to NBC New York. Rescue workers evacuated the elderly people from their homes, but Teresa Casale, 84, was found dead. Police confirmed Monday that Lynn Citron, 74, initially survived with serious injuries, but she later died from her burns. Two other elderly people were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Surprised elderly residents were forced to quickly evacuate their homes amid sub-zero temperatures and snow-covered ground. Community residents like Christine Intindri expressed their sadness over the incident and described the strength of solidarity among residents. “We know each other and everyone is friendly. The paper said evacuated elderly people could temporarily stay with local families or stay in arranged hotels. A spokeswoman for the Oyster Bay Housing Authority said about 20 people were evacuated. Local churches and many volunteers provided clothing, food, and other needed assistance.

As residents like Intindori began to settle down that night, firefighters were called back to the scene to deal with remaining hot spots.
