“Failure to fully comply with the above expectations or additional justified complaints from staff will result in termination of employment,” the letter warned. The Mayo Clinic also noted the need to protect its “brand and reputation” by restricting Joyner’s public comment multiple times.
The letter said Joyner’s comments to the New York Times about gender differences in athletic competition were “problematic” for the Mayo Clinic’s LGBT community.
“When testosterone spikes in a boy, you see an immediate difference. There is a dramatic difference in performance,” he told the media. “Sport has a social side, but it’s the physiology and biology that underpin it. Testosterone is an 800-pound gorilla.”
