Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin appeared on MSNBC on Sunday to discuss gun violence with the Rev. Al Sharpton. During the interview, Sharpton asked Woodfin about former President Trump's comments at the National Rifle Association's annual event, as well as the recent string of mass shootings in Birmingham. “I can tell you it's been a tough week here in town,” Woodfin said, “and I think it has to do with gun violence. I'm glad that these two children survived, but they and their families should not have had to go through this trauma, especially on Mother's Day.”

“A week after the shootings, I was asked how I felt to see a former president speaking in front of the NRA. I'm sickened,” Woodfin said. “We need members of both the House and Senate to have the courage to stand up to the NRA.”

Woodfin, who is supporting Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, has always been a staunch opponent of President Trump and a vocal advocate of a ban on “military-style and assault weapons.”

At the Texas event mentioned by Sharpton, President Trump thanked the NRA for its continued faith and urged voters to protect their Second Amendment rights in order to cast their ballot in the next presidential election.

“The NRA has been with me from the beginning, and with your vote I can stand strong for your rights and freedoms,” Trump said. “This is an endorsement of the proud patriots of the NRA. They are great patriots. They are great people. And we're going to do things that no one will believe.”
