Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Director Alejandro Mayorcas did not answer any questions from reporters at a press conference on the southern border on Thursday and quickly fled.
Mayorkas appears at the St. Elizabeth campus, home to several DHS offices in Washington, D.C., to discuss new sustainable buildings and parking garages in connection with a $288 million investment as part of the Control Inflation Act. Ta. The DHS team of reporters instructed reporters to arrive at least 45 minutes before the outdoor event, clear security, and drive golf carts to the area on campus where the conference was to be held. “Mr. Secretary, the southern border population has reached 130,000 after declining. Is the legal route working?”
Mayorcas then quickly turned his head and walked away, but the press conference continued walking with DC Congressman Eleanor Holmes Norton.
“When will you answer my question?” the reporter asked as Mayorcas walked away.
The Biden administration has reduced the number of illegal immigration encounters to about 99,000 after the policy ended in June, with the legal immigration program put in place to deal with the expected surge in illegal immigration after May 11. It is advertised as the reason why the number of cases has decreased. However, in July, the number of encounters with illegal immigrants reached 130,000.
One of the programs, CBP One, a phone app that allows immigrants to make reservations for legal entry, saw a record surge in immigrants entering through ports of entry in June after Title 42 ended. connected to

Ahead of the press conference, a DHS spokesperson told reporters after standing outside for an hour that Mr Mayorcas would not be taking questions.
“So why are we here?” the reporter asked.
After the press conference ended, a DHS employee, who was driving reporters in golf carts to the campus exit, told reporters that Mr. Mayorkas had to leave due to scheduling conflicts.
“Unfortunately, he had another engagement, but we couldn’t say for sure,” she said.
