MCSO’s Brutus back on the job | Kingman Daily Miner

KINGMAN – K-9 Brutus is one of four dogs in a unit of the Mohave County Sheriff Department. Brutus was assigned to the Arizona Strip Unit in northern Mojave County. He also assists in the Kingman area.

One night after a long day at work, Brutus returned home around 2:00 am on February 4th with his handler deputy Jeremy Ferrish.

After Brutus had dinner, Ferish and his wife noticed that Brutus was showing bloating.

Bloating, also known as gastric volvulus dilatation (GDV), occurs when a dog’s stomach fills with gas, food, or liquid and then twists.

GDV can develop without warning and can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

By 5:15 am, Brutus was undergoing surgery at Kanab Veterinary Hospital in Kanab, Utah. Thanks to the speed of getting him to the vet, Brutus had a successful operation and was in good health.

Brutus, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, was back on duty within a week and quickly helped arrest the suspect who had barricaded himself in the vehicle.

Deputy Ferrish said he was excited for Brutus to return to work.

“Brutus couldn’t wait to get back to work and, frankly, was a little upset when he wasn’t allowed to go to work with his handler during his light duty,” Ferrish said. .

On Friday, February 16th, Brutus unstapled and completed the mission. Brutus quickly returned to work, smelled two cars that day, and responded to the agency’s request for assistance to the Colorado City Sheriff’s Department. “

Deputy Ferrish said officers were trying to detain the suspect during the authorities’ assist call.

“Brutus was brought to the scene to help eliminate the suspect,” Deputy Felish said. “One look at Brutus changed the suspect’s mind and he surrendered to the Senator without incident.”

Brutus graduated from the Canine Academy on Halloween 2017 and has been active ever since.

“Brutus has been in the military for just over six years now,” Deputy Ferrish said.

“His primary assignments are in the Arizona Strip area, including the towns of Colorado City, Cane Beds, Moccasins, Centennial Park, Desert Springs, Littlefield, Beaver Dam and Scenic.”

“Brutus is also used extensively in the Kingman area and is also used for special detail on Interstate 15 and Interstate 40. Brutus is also the only dog on the SWAT team.”
