Annual event in downtown Yuma

Yuma, AZ (KYMA, KECY) – 2023 Medjool Date Festival in downtown Yuma.

For further context, this event is an annual event spanning about ten years and features eating and selling dates in the most traditional and unique way.

“We have been growing dates for over 50 years. All of our dates are hand-picked from humans,” said Brandon Owl, Imperial Date Gardens Production Manager.

From eating out of the box to frying on a stick, past and present, there is no shortage of creativity and competitive spirit.

“At the first date festival that actually happened, there was a date shake competition and Martha’s Garden actually won that competition. [have been] named [the] It’s been the best date shake in the world ever since,” said Nels Rogers of Martha’s Date Farm.

Martha’s Garden has been a staple of the Medul Date Festival since the festival’s inception.Not only that, they are always happy to open shop for customers

“It’s always been a great experience. Just seeing people come from here in Yuma to see the local producers. It’s been a great turnout,” Rogers continued.

The variety of what to create with a date seems very simple, but it is also very complex.

“We make dates coconut roles, almond roles with other nuts, we make date shakes, we make date bread,” concludes Owl.

Live music and guests of all kinds added the flavor of a date, making it a memorable experience for all.
