Memorial Day: Cooler than normal with some winds

Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY-TV) – Today was a sunny and dry Memorial Day, with afternoon temperatures tending to be cooler than normal.

Temperatures will start dropping to the low 80’s to high 70’s later tonight with cooler nights.

Wind gusts will begin to increase this evening and into the night, with strong westerly winds of 20 to 25 mph expected in Imperial County, with a maximum wind speed of 35 mph.

Winds will continue to be strong in the Yuma County area, with gusts of up to 20 mph expected.

Winds will pick up further in the southwestern corner of Imperial County, with gusts of up to 45 mph.

A patch of dust will also affect you if you travel west along Interstate 8 and Interstate 10 between 8pm and 10pm tonight.

Light winds are expected to continue through Tuesday afternoon, with winds expected to pick up again through the evening and into the night.

The Imperial County APCD issued an Air Quality Alert for Imperial County Tuesday afternoon through early evening due to an increase in particulate matter from blowing dust.

A colder trend is expected through the middle to late week, with maximum temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s in the southwestern desert.

A warming trend will arrive over the weekend, with maximum temperatures returning to the seasonal average.

Continued discharges from the Painted Rock Dam have decreased and gauges along the Gila River near Dateland and Dome/Yuma are now 1.5 to 2 feet below the action stage.

Flood warnings are in effect through at least May 30 along the Gila River between the Painted Rock Dam and the Colorado River.
