Men’s Tennis Wraps Up ITA Regional Championships

Flagstaff, Arizona (October 22, 2024) – The NAU men’s tennis team competed at the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. The lumberjacks who went on a trip to the tournament were new students. Kai Millsnew student Jakub Volesky2nd grade semen aginsky2nd grade Yakub Pracharjunior Takumi Katsuta and senior Dani Torres.

In doubles, the Lumberjacks were unable to win a match, with Bolesky and Katsuta losing in the tiebreaker 8-7 (6) to the University of Utah pair, but the margin was the closest.

The Lumberjacks had more success on the singles side. Torres made it the farthest of any NAU athlete in the main event, advancing to the quarterfinals. On his way to his dorm, he defeated BYU’s No. 2 seed, senior Wally Sain, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Aginsky was the second lumberjack in the main event. He started with a strong bagel, defeating sophomore Yushun Lai of Idaho 6-2, 6-0 in the first round. However, the Ukrainian’s playing time was short-lived as he lost to fifth-seeded Utah junior Berg Bugalik. Aginski fought in the second set, but lost in the tiebreak 6-2, 7-6 (2).

The remaining four Lumberjacks entered the qualifying draw. Katsuta earned one win by defeating BYU junior Alex Edmonston 6-4, 6-4 in a draw. Katsuta’s next match was a 6-3, 6-4 loss to 12th-seeded University of Denver senior Rikuto Yamaguchi.

Since Pracha was the third seed, he was able to earn a first-round bye through the qualifying draw. In the second round, Pracher was defeated by Utah State senior David Martirosyan 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Mills went 1-1 with either a repechage match or a qualifying draw. Mills’ victory came in a third-set tiebreaker against Utah sophomore Nicholas Calixto, who won by a scoreline of 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.

Bolesky fell to 0-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to BYU sophomore Otto Schreiner.
