The Maricopa County Air Quality Authority has ordered an East Valley recycling facility to immediately extinguish a mulch fire that has been burning for more than a week.
The Rural Metro Fire Department, along with Mesa, Gilbert, and Queen Creek fire department personnel, will open the CTS Green Waste Recycling near Sosaman Road and Elliot Road on June 1, according to department spokeswoman Ari Halpert. He said he responded and tried to control the fire.
Halpert said the fire department has returned control of the fire to CTS Green Waste Recycling, but it is still unclear when the fire will be fully extinguished. Halpert added that the Air Quality Administration received multiple complaints from residents near the recycling facility and immediately ordered the company to put out the fire.
Halpert said failure to comply with the order could result in a $10,000 fine for each day the fire lasts.
CTS Greenwaste Recycling has issued a brief statement to The Republic regarding its efforts to extinguish the multi fire.
“We are already working 24/7 and are still working,” CTS Greenwaste Recycling wrote in an email to The Republic.
