Diaz was ejected after an umpire noted he had “excessive” sticky substance on his hands during a hand examination — before he even started pitching. You read that correctly. Diaz was sent back to the locker room before throwing a single pitch, and his absence was obvious to the Mets. Luckily for them, they played a good game. 5-2 victory But against the Cubs, he struggled to close out games.
ESPN, broadcasting the game on “Sunday Night Baseball,” showed a close-up of Diaz's right hand, clearly showing the gray abrasions. 9 timesHe was quickly caught and punished.
