Mike Densmore defeats sitting Mayor Woody Baird in Alexander City

A new mayor will take office in Alexander on November 3rd.

In a tight election, Mike Densmore managed to unseat the incumbent Mayor Woody Baird, winning by just 58 votes. The unofficial tally showed Densmore at 1,610 votes compared to Baird’s 1,552.

Densmore will be joined at City Hall by new council members for Districts 4 and 6. Kelly Waldrop emerged victorious in the fourth district, securing about 60% of the vote against Frank Tapley. Mike Lucas claimed the sixth district with 53% of the votes.

A businessman and a long-time pastor, Densmore is a local, having graduated from Benjamin Russell High School. He brings 30 years of corporate experience from his work with Goodyear Tires and Rubber.

At the start of his campaign, Densmore emphasized his commitment to listening to the people of Alex City. He stated, “When you’re a civil servant, you work for people, and I think my time in business and serving as a pastor in this community gives us a unique perspective on moving our city forward.”

Densmore earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Auburn University and also participated in the football and wrestling teams. He began his career in education and coaching at schools in Gadsden before transitioning to Goodyear, where he concluded his tenure as director of global strategic planning and organizational development after three decades.

He actively chairs various community boards, including those for the Russell Medical Foundation Strategic Planning Committee, Chamber of Commerce, and United Way.

After his victory on Tuesday night, Densmore promised to work diligently to honor the trust his neighbors placed in him. He remarked, “This is a new day for our community. Let’s leave our rearview mirrors and look forward to it with our faith, hope and love for Alexander City.” He expressed excitement about future accomplishments together with the community.

Baird had first won the mayoral position in 2020 after serving on the city council.

Densmore noted, “This campaign wasn’t about me. It was about the future of Alex City. It’s time to seriously work on improving children’s educational outcomes, promoting economic growth, investing in infrastructure, and improving the quality of life for our citizens.”
