Mike DeWine Taps Jon Husted To Replace JD Vance In Senate

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Friday nominated Lt. Gov. Jon Husted to replace Senate Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.

DeWine made the announcement during a press conference Friday afternoon. “I look forward to working with J.D. Vance and President Trump to Make America Great Again,” Husted said at a press conference.

Mr. DeWine detailed at the press conference why he thought Mr. Husted was the “best suited” candidate to fill Mr. Vance’s seat. “We wanted someone who had a strong grasp and understanding of the complexities of Ohio State,” DeWine said. “I also wanted someone who could understand the interactions between the federal and state governments.”

Husted will need to run in a special election scheduled for November 2026 to serve out the remainder of Vance’s term. Ohio Republicans must seek re-election in 2028 to seek re-election to the Senate.

Other candidates who have emerged to fill Vance’s Senate seat include Ohio Republican National Committeewoman Jane Timken, Republican Ohio Congressman Mike Carey, and DOGE co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy. was.

Husted’s appointment comes after Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis nominated Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to replace Sen. Marco Rubio, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state. It was done.
