Mike Johnson Appears To Fall Short On First Round Of Speaker Vote

Speaker Mike Johnson failed to receive a majority of votes in Friday’s House speaker vote to remain speaker of the 119th Congress.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Rep. Keith Self of Texas voted for the House Republican Conference chairman over others.

All Democrats in attendance voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Given the slim Republican majority in the House, Johnson could regain the speakership by losing just one Republican vote.

The House continues to vote consecutively until a Speaker is elected.
