TUSAYAN, Arizona — Fire managers in the Williams and Tusayan Ranger districts of the Kaibab National Forest plan to conduct prescribed fires during the spring when conditions permit, and starting next week at a lead project just east of Tusayan. let’s start doing ….
The crew will begin igniting on May 1 and will burn up to 1,370 acres over several days. Smoke may be visible from State Route 64, Tusayan, and the Grand Canyon, and daytime winds should carry the smoke northeast. The remaining smoke settles overnight in the drainage channels and lowlands around Tusayan. Portions of the nearby Arizona Trail will remain open.
The Russell (509 acres) and Blue Stem Projects (3,885 acres) are located on the east side of the Tusayan Ranger District, 15 to 20 miles northeast of California State Route 64, in Red Butte near Russell Tank. Minimal smoke effects are expected.
The exact date of ignition is unknown, as combustion is subject to daily engine manager approval and conditions within the ranges outlined in each prescribed fire plan.
