“We don’t want to waste precious resources enforcing our broken federal immigration system,” Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) state Rep. Sandra Feist told Reformers. “This is a huge priority for me this session because Donald Trump has said he wants to mobilize state and local resources to enact his immigration vision.”
The bill would also apply to teachers and professors at public educational institutions, local government employees, and public health workers. Among other prohibitions, it prohibits such persons from sharing data regarding their immigration status, discriminating in the treatment of individuals based on their immigration status, and using state funds to assist federal authorities in removing illegal aliens. “[T]This may be our last chance to pass legislation like this that ensures Minnesota is not complicit in that vision,” Feist told Reformer.
