MOBILE, Ariz. — A missing woman whose body was found near a southern Valley landfill is believed to be the victim of a homicide, authorities said.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announced that the body of 38-year-old Crystal Uptein was found near a landfill near Maricopa in Mobile, Arizona, on December 5th.
She was reported missing by the Maricopa Police Department in late November.
Her body was found with “suspicious circumstances surrounding the scene” and “unexplained injuries.”
“I just want to give Krystal justice. She deserves justice. 100 percent, this should never have happened,” said Eric Bontrager, a friend of Apteyn's since high school.
Bontrager and other friends ABC15 spoke to, who did not want to appear on camera, told ABC15 that she was the “sweetest” person. They said that although she experienced some difficulties in her life, she still showed up, had a positive attitude and would be a light for others.
“Just the best and loveliest person. People say that about the ones they love, I know. But it was true about Crystal. There are very few people as good as her, as good as she is. The fact that she was eliminated in this way… it was so upsetting. There are no words. It's too much to even comprehend,” Bontrager said.
On Thursday, MCSO said there were no new updates. Authorities are still searching her vehicle.
ABC15 also reached out to Aptein's partner, who said he would not comment publicly.
