Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell is expected to announce he will not seek reelection Thursday morning, according to multiple reports.
McConnell, 83, headed the Senate Republican Conference for decades before resigning at the end of his final Congress. Following President Donald Trump’s decision to oppose the selection of a well-known minister, there was widespread speculation that a former Republican leader would be resigning.
McConnell will continue to chair the Senate Budget and Defense Subcommittee until his retirement, giving former GOP leaders a perch against Trump’s foreign policy agenda.
Many Kentucky Republicans are expected to jump into the race in 2026 to replace McConnell.
